Zdzislaw Beksinski was a 20th century Polish artist. He made surreal paintings with eerie, dystopian, or outright horror themes.
He did not believe his works had an inherent meaning and chose not to provide titles for them. He was noted to have burned some of his works that he deemed too personal or not up to his standards.
Beksinski died in 2005 when a 19-year-old acquaintance stabbed him 17 times apparently for not loaning him money. The acquaintance was sentenced to 25 years in prison. His wife died in 1998. In 1999, Beksinski found his son (an only child) dead after he had committed suicide on Christmas Eve.
