Holy Week, or "Semana Santa" in Spanish, is a widely observed Catholic holiday in Spain. It is the last week of Lent, just before Easter Sunday. Many towns and cities throughout Spain have their own festivals, parades, traditions, and outfits.

The most common outfits incorporate the capirote. The capirote is a pointed conical hat which Americans typically associate with the KKK. This sinister-looking attire dates back to the 14th century. At the time, it was worn by flagellants to hide their faces after the presiding pope attempted to suppress their activities. Flagellants were members of a Catholic movement that used self-harm as a form of penance. Later, it was used on those arrested by the Catholic Inquisition as a form of public humiliation. Being a symbol of penance, it survived to modern days where it is used in these Holy Week celebrations. Only members of the local Catholic brotherhood are supposed to don the capirote.
